Unfortunately we don't have a good list of accessible
trails but would love
to have one. Just labeling a park/trail as handicapped accessible is insufficient
for most handicapped people as their abilities span a very large
spectrum and vary from mobility issues to hearing, sight and other
problems. A number of (mostly western) parks are starting to label
trails with codes that give the user enough information to judge for themselves whether they can do it.
Known Accessible Trails
- Most Rails to Trails paved paths are handicapped accessible.
- There is a very short part of some of the trails on the top of Bear
Mt. that are accessible.
- DeKorte Park in the Meadowlands (great birding - trails are a little
more difficult)
- Alpine Boat Basin
- Loantaka Brook Reservation
- The NJ Walk Book has an index item listing several places under
handicapped access.
- Belleplain State Forest
- Cattus Island Park
- Flat Rock Brook Nature Center
- Great Swamp Outdoor Ed Center
- Lebanon State Forest
- Lord Sterling Park (Great Swamp)
- Manasquan Reservoir
- Merrill Creek Reservoir Environmental Preserve
- Ramapo Valley County Reservation
- Stokes State Forest
- Swartswood State Park
- Hook Mountain Loop
Please help
us make this list more useful! No one can find or rate handicapped
trails better than the handicapped or their helpers.
